The people of Mitiaro gathered in early July for a ceremony to bless new recycling bins, marking an important step in the island’s waste management efforts. The event took place outside the CICC Sunday school hall, with a blessing led by church ministers, followed by speeches from community leaders, including the Ui Ariki, Aronga Mana, the Executive Officer, representatives from Te Matangarengare School, and all four tapere on the island. Each speaker encouraged the community to use the bins to properly sort and separate waste, reduce litter, and protect the environment.
The new recycling bins will be placed at seven key locations around the island, including the Airport, School, Hospital, Community Hall, Atai & Auta Meeting House, Takaue & Mangarei Meeting House, and the Admin Block. By strategically placing these bins, the initiative aims to make it easier for residents to separate waste and contribute to cleaner surroundings.
This initiative, funded by the National Environment Service (NES), grew from community discussions that highlighted the need for better waste management solutions in the Pa Enua. NES developed the project to support cleaner, healthier islands, with strong community backing and a commitment to using the bins responsibly.
To ensure its success, the NES Mitiaro Environment Officer will monitor the bins’ use and condition, assessing the project’s effectiveness and identifying areas for improvement. NES, in collaboration with the Mitiaro Infrastructure team and Executive Officer, will oversee regular maintenance of the bins.
NES plans to expand this initiative across the Pa Enua. The next phase will focus on raising public awareness on each island, encouraging sustainable waste management practices, and further supporting the community’s environmental efforts.
