Kia Orana, I am Emii Akava- an 18-year-old recent Secondary College graduate and a current intern at the Cook Islands National Environment Service.

I’m excited to explore new opportunities, gain valuable work experience, and discover where my interest and passions will lead me. Through this article, I would like to share a bit about my journey so far and my aspirations for the future.
Background
I was born and raised in the Cook Islands, on the island of Rarotonga where I grew up in the villages of Matavera and Arorangi, in a loving family full of music and creativity. I love listening to music, and enjoy drawing, and spending time outdoors, whether it’s going for a walk or swim (though not so much raking rubbish.) These hobbies have helped me to take interest in the environment, particularly geography one of my school subjects, looking at topography maps and how cultural factors has contributed to the environment on Rarotonga and the world.
Educational Journey
I recently graduated from Tereora College, receiving third overall in Geography and Horticulture. During my NCEA studies, I took subjects such as Geography, Biology, and Horticulture. These subjects deepen my understanding of the environment and biodiversity and further strengthened my desire to pursue a career in this field.
Personal Interest and Hobbies Outside of work, I enjoy participating in sports particularly oe vaka, and spending time in the ocean, where I am always reminded of the beauty and vastness of our moana. I have represented the Cook Islands twice in the IVF (International Va’a Federation) competitions and have won third place in Samoa alongside my paddling team. I am also actively involved in the Catholic Church community at St Mary’s in Arorangi where I’m a part of the music industry with my siblings and assist with the youth group activities. Additionally, I enjoy volunteering in Athletic events such as Prince of Wales every October for the Primary schools, where I help in the shot put and discus throw division.
Looking forward, I hope to continue to work for National Environment Service (NES) even beyond my three-month internship. I also plan to pursue further education and aim to attend USP (University of The South Pacific,) to study Environmental Biology, so I can deepen my understanding of the ecosystem, biodiversity, and conservation within the Pacific region.
Personal Anecdotes
One unforgettable moment for me was last year December during my family reunion in Atiu. I was honored to meet Papa George Mateariki, famously known as the Bird Man at his home in Areora. Our family had to opportunity to meet Papa George as he was meant to be a part of the reunion but was unable to attend due to, I’ll health. Despite this, he took the time to speak with our family, particularly the Pa metua(elders) those attending the trust meeting, where the people of Atiu and community leaders gather to discuss the future of the island of Atiu. During this conversation, Papa George passionately spoke about the future and protection of the birds, especially the Te Kura. His words carried great meaning and responsibility, highlighting the importance of safeguarding Atiu’s biodiversity. What further encouraged me to pursue a pathway in environmental biodiversity work was when I asked to take photos of the bird posters in his home and shared my desire to work in the environmental field. Despite his tiredness, Papa George strongly encouraged me and took the time to explain the birds on the poster in detail before I returned home. That moment left a lasting impression on me and strengthened my commitment to protect the environment and its biodiversity.
To conclude, I am an eager and motivated young adult keen to learn and grow. My experiences as a Secondary College graduate and a current intern have confirmed my passion for environmental biodiversity. I look forward to future opportunities, challengers, and adventures, and I hope to make a meaningful difference along the way.
