Stewardship
The National Environment Service applies stewardship to the planning and management of the environment and natural resources in the Cook Islands. The key focus areas are in Biodiversity and Conservation areas. Research and environmental baseline data the is the driving force to ensure NES’s stewardship measures are supported by science and data. The Pa Enua, or Outer Islands, is a key strategic area for NES to provide resources and management expertise.
Biodiversity
Biodiversity or ‘biological diversity’, is the variety of life on earth like plants, animals and micro-organisms. Their interactions and interdependence to survive will help create a rich and thriving environment.
Conservation
The management of natural resources need planning in order to prevent any form of destruction or exploitation. Ecosystem services, protected areas and species conservation are key programmes used.
Protection
The protection of natural resources is a responsibility of everyone - Government, organisations and members of the community. In this area NES focuses on Waste Management, CITES permits, research and the Pa Enua (outer islands)
