As part of Plastic Free July, Plastic Reboot Cook Islands supported efforts to reduce single-use plastic waste at this year’s BCI Trade Days through the return of the popular Rent a Plate initiative.
The initiative was delivered through a partnership between Plastic Reboot Cook Islands, Business Trade and Investment Board (BTIB), Te Ipukarea Society (TIS) and Punanga Nui Market.
As organisers of BCI Trade Days 2026, BTIB provided an important platform for promoting sustainable practices at one of the Cook Islands’ largest annual community events. By incorporating the Rent a Plate initiative into the event, BTIB is helping demonstrate how practical waste reduction measures can be successfully integrated into large public gatherings.
The reusable dishware system is operated by Te Ipukarea Society, which manages the collection, washing and reuse of plates and cutlery throughout the event. Visitors are able to borrow reusable dishware before purchasing food from participating vendors and return the items after use, helping reduce the number of disposable containers and utensils entering the waste stream.
The initiative highlights the value of collaboration in addressing plastic pollution. By bringing together event organisers, environmental organisations, vendors and the public, BCI Trade Days is providing a practical example of how small changes can contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable Cook Islands.
Plastic Reboot Cook Islands acknowledges BTIB, Te Ipukarea Society, Punanga Nui Market, participating vendors and the community for supporting efforts to reduce reliance on single-use plastics and promote a culture of reuse.
