The National Environment Service welcomes the appointment of George Makita as the new Environment Officer for Manihiki and joins 8 other Pa Enua staff within the Environmental Stewardship Department.
George, who has a strong interest in the environment sector, began his first official day on Wednesday 14th May. One of his biggest challenges is finding a solution to the large amounts of discarded mooring buoys littering the island and motu’s.
George spent his early years attending Ruamanu School, then onto Tereora College while working part-time in Rarotonga before moving to New Zealand where he worked as a Restaurant General Manager for Restaurant Brands Limited who operates KFC, Pizza Hut, Carl’s Jr and Taco Bell New Zealand.
In 2023 George and his family returned to Manihiki to enable his children to be raised on the island he calls home.
Since his appointment, George has been keeping close communication with Rarotonga and attending weekly virtual meetings with other Pa Enua Environment Officers, and will be working with the team virtually on other environmental programs on the island of Manihiki.
