NES is pleased to announce that five of its staff members- Troy Penno, Cailean Henderson, Keanu Harawira and Alowesi Suveinakama have successfully completed a two-day intensive training program in deep sea safety, held from 16-17 April 2025. The training focused on the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Model Course 1.19: Proficiency in Personal Survival Techniques (2019 Edition), a globally recognised standard for maritime safety training.​
This course is designed to equip seafarers with the essential knowledge and skills required to survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment. It aligns with the mandatory minimum standards of competence outlined in the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers Code (STCW).
Throughout the course, participants engaged in both theoretical and practical sessions covering:​
- Donning lifejackets and immersion suits
- Safely jumping from a height into the water
- Righting an inverted liferaft while wearing a lifejacket
- Swimming while wearing a lifejacket and keeping afloat without one
- Boarding survival crafts from ship and water
- Taking initial actions on boarding survival crafts to enhance chances of survival
- Operating survival craft equipment and location devices, including radio equipment​.
Upon successful completion, each staff member received a certificate in Personal Survival Techniques, signifying their preparedness to handle emergency situations at sea effectively.
