The National Environment Service (NES), through the Pacific Ocean Litter Project (POLP), has partnered with Enuamanu School in Atiu, Mangaia School, Mitiaro School and Mauke School through the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) to strengthen environmental education, recycling awareness and waste management in the Pa Enua.
The partnerships will support the installation of Interactive Recycling Waste Stations and a three-month waste audit programme at each school.
The initiative will provide students with practical opportunities to learn about waste reduction, segregation, recycling and responsible waste management. Students and teachers will participate in waste audits to monitor waste generation and recycling, with the findings helping to inform future waste management planning.
NES will provide the recycling stations and equipment, while working with NES Pa Enua officers, school principals and teachers to support implementation, monitoring and reporting.
Mii Herman, Senior Environmental Partnerships Co-Coordinator, said the initiative provides an important opportunity for students to become environmental leaders.
“By empowering students with practical tools and knowledge, we are creating opportunities for young people to become leaders in environmental stewardship and build a culture of sustainability within our schools and communities.”
NES acknowledges the support of school principals, teachers, NES Pa Enua officers and local stakeholders and looks forward to working with the participating schools to promote cleaner, healthier and more sustainable communities.
