Representatives from the National Environment Service (NES) and Ministry of Agriculture attended the Nature for Health Scoping Workshop and 2nd Quadripartite One Health Workshop in Nadi, Fiji, between 28 September and 2 October 2026.

The workshops brought together Pacific countries and regional partners to improve coordination between human, animal and environmental health sectors under the One Health approach.

During the Nature for Health workshop, the Cook Islands shared its experience in environmental impact assessments (EIAs), highlighting their role in identifying potential environmental impacts before activities take place. Discussions emphasised the importance of early prevention, alongside effective health responses, and how weak governance arrangements can limit national implementation.

The second workshop reviewed regional progress since August 2024, focusing on national One Health policies, stronger coordination between sectors, and the integration of environmental responsibilities under Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs).

Regional recommendations included developing a One Health Roadmap, improving access to technical support and financing, and formally designating national focal points with clearly defined responsibilities.

Following the workshops, Cook Islands representatives began laying the groundwork towards establishing a national One Health Committee to support coordinated action across environment, agriculture and health agencies.
