Manihiki Environment Officer George Makita recently completed a practical training programme in Aitutaki aimed at strengthening skills in environmental assessment, project monitoring, and compliance.

Organised by the National Environment Service (NES), the training included visits to a range of development sites, including residential projects, the Aitutaki Airport development, Arutanga Wharf, coastal sites, and areas undergoing vegetation clearance. These visits provided valuable insight into how environmental risks are identified, assessed, and managed throughout the development process.

A highlight of the programme was a visit to Motu Akitua, home to the Aitutaki Private Island Resort, where George joined marine consultant Richard Story for coral observation and lagoon clean-up activities. The visit provided an opportunity to learn about reef health monitoring, coral conservation efforts, and the importance of protecting Aitutaki’s marine environment through active management and community involvement.

George also participated in a practical field inspection exercise, gaining experience in identifying environmental issues, recording observations, taking photographs, and assessing compliance with environmental requirements.

“The training gave me valuable hands-on experience and a better understanding of what to look for during site inspections and environmental assessments,” George said. The knowledge gained will help support sustainable development in Manihiki, particularly as future infrastructure and community projects emerge. It will also strengthen local capacity to protect the island’s unique marine, coastal, and natural environment.
