The Life Skills Programme at Apii Mauke has continued through Terms 1 and 2, giving students practical opportunities to learn about Mauke’s environment and take part in activities that connect classroom learning with their island.
During Term 1, students explored plants, animals, habitats, wetlands and biodiversity. Activities included a visit to the Makatea Taro Swamp, where students observed the local wetland and discussed its importance. They also learned about invasive species, including red passion fruit, and the importance of monitoring and protecting Mauke’s ecosystems.
In Term 2, the programme continued with “Tiaki ia Mauke – Our Environment” and connected environmental learning with agriculture through “Te Rito o Taku Enua – Our Agriculture.” Students explored waste management, recycling, composting, plastic pollution, biodiversity and sustainable practices.
A Mini Expo held in collaboration with the Mauke Agriculture Department gave students the opportunity to take part in practical activities including coconut husking, composting coconut fibre, planting and exploring alternatives to single-use plastics. The activities also showed how traditional knowledge and sustainable practices can contribute to caring for Mauke’s environment.
The programme is now continuing into Term 3, with a broader focus on biodiversity, climate, community wellbeing, environmental art, data collection and conservation. Students will explore the connections between people and the environment, while developing practical skills in observing, recording and understanding environmental changes. Through hands-on activities, creative learning and conservation, students will also be encouraged to think about the role they can play in protecting Mauke’s plants, animals, habitats and natural resources.
At the heart of the Life Skills Programme is helping students become young environmental stewards and future leaders of Mauke. By giving students opportunities to observe, ask questions, collect information, be creative and take action, the programme is building their understanding of the responsibility we all share in caring for Mauke.
