The Cook Islands Government is proud to announce that Palmerston atoll has officially been declared rat-free, marking a monumental achievement in environmental conservation. This milestone follows a year-long monitoring and assessment programme led by the Palmerston Biosecurity Officer with support from New Zealand Department of Conservation (NZDOC) and validated by the NZDOC Island Eradication Advisory Group (IEAG).
The eradication project initiated in 2019, involved the coordinated application of hand-broadcasted bait across Home Island and Cooks Motu in September 2023. A rigorous validation process, including advanced monitoring devices and biosecurity protocols, confirmed the complete absence of rodents across all sampling areas. This effort represents one of the Pacific’s first and a national first for the Cook Islands—a rat-free status for an inhabited island community.
Deputy Prime Minister, Member of Parliament for Palmerston Island, Hon. Minister, Albert Nicholas, extended his congratulations to the Palmerston community and all involved stakeholders: “This achievement demonstrates the power of collaboration and dedication to environmental preservation. By restoring the ecological balance, Palmerston Atoll sets an example for the entire country and Pacific region.”
Going forward, the focus shifts to maintaining the atoll’s rat-free status. Robust biosecurity measures are already in place, including routine monitoring of incoming cargo and a community-led food scrap observation initiative.
The eradication project not only protects native biodiversity but also enhances agricultural productivity and community wellbeing. It is a testament to the Cook Islands’ commitment to sustainable environmental practices and building resilience of communities to climate change impacts.
“Palmerston’s success is a source of pride for our nation. I commend the unwavering efforts of the Palmerston community, government and local NGO partners, NZDOC, and the local biosecurity team. Let us all continue to safeguard this incredible achievement,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.
