It was a warm and joyful gathering as we celebrated sixteen years of service from Papa Tupuariki Puna, who has faithfully served as Chairman of the Aitutaki Environment Authority. The celebration lunch was filled with laughter, gratitude, and heartfelt words from members past and present.
We were especially blessed to hear stories shared by former Environment Officer Bobby Bishop, who worked alongside Papa Tupuariki for many years. His reflections reminded us of the steady leadership and quiet wisdom Papa brought to the table.
Papa’s greatest strength has always been his deep cultural and historical knowledge of Aitutaki. In every discussion, the stories of our land, our ancestors, and our identity were never far from his mind. He has witnessed immense change and development on our island over his lifetime, yet his passion remained clear that progress must always respect and protect Aitutaki’s unique beauty.
Papa shared how he once watched a countdown of the world’s most beautiful places, and Aitutaki was ranked number 15. As he recalled the moment, tears filled his eyes and we could see what that ranking truly meant to him. A quiet stillness came over the room as we watched and waited for him to continue his story. But he did not say any more. Instead, he left us sitting in that silence, each of us reflecting for ourselves, perhaps gently challenged to consider our own responsibility in maintaining that ranking and protecting the beauty we have been entrusted with.
As we send Papa Tupuariki into a well-earned retirement, we thank him for being a true Environmental Tau’nga for our island, a faithful steward of both land, lagoon and legacy. God bless you, Papa.
