The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is currently conducting a comprehensive review and update of its Safeguard Policy Statement (SPS), as part of its commitment to continue supporting the inclusive and sustainable development of Asia and the Pacific region.
A regional consultation meeting funded by ADB, and organized and managed by SPRU Secretariat, was held in Nadi, Fiji from the 4th to the 5th March 2024. The consultation meeting is basically for government officials from the Polynesian, Melanesian, and Micronesian countries, an opportunity for them to voice, express, and to share their views and opinions on ADB’s draft Environment Safeguard Framework.
Official’s from NES (Mr Vavia Tangatataia), PPTO (Mr Cameron Leach), and Ms Grace Chynoweth (Internal Affairs) attended the consultation meeting representing the government of the Cook Islands.
The main objectives of the Organizers is to widely consult with key government stakeholders looking into: (i) modernizing the policy and applying good practices, (ii) Harmonizing with comparator multilateral development banks (MDBs), (iii) Adapting to regional needs and financing, and, (iv) Enhancing business processes and efficiency.
These objectives are aimed at improving the implementation and outcomes for affected people and the environment
Bruce Dunn, Director of the Office of Safeguards, thanked the participants for a successful meeting, “really insightful views shared on support needs for building climate resilience, protecting biodiversity and cultural heritage, challenges with land availability, and engaging early and meaningfully with local communities on projects in the Pacific context. Supporting local institutions to build capacity is also seen as a must.”
