The Cook Islands recently participated in the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Pacific Expanded Constituency Workshop held in Nadi, Fiji from 24–27 February 2026.
The workshop brought together Pacific Island countries, development partners, and international agencies to strengthen collaboration and plan for future environmental investments across the region.
Representatives from the National Environment Service, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, and other agencies attended as part of the Cook Islands delegation. The workshop provided an opportunity to review ongoing projects, share regional experiences, and begin planning for the next round of GEF funding (GEF-9).
Key discussions focused on strengthening climate resilience, sustainable food systems, biodiversity conservation, waste management, and sustainable transport solutions. The Cook Islands also explored opportunities to expand marine conservation efforts in support of global 30×30 commitments.
Importantly, the delegation confirmed continued progress on national GEF-supported initiatives and engaged with partners to ensure timely delivery of current projects. Early planning for future funding priorities will support coordinated national action across sectors including agriculture, infrastructure, transport, and marine management.
The Cook Islands also participated in Pacific regional discussions to ensure that small island priorities remain visible in international environmental financing decisions.
Participation in the workshop strengthens the Cook Islands’ ability to access international environmental funding, build regional partnerships, and deliver practical outcomes that support sustainable development and environmental resilience for present and future generations
